ITINERANT BOOK HOUSE

Abstract
The Itinerant Book House project born from the idea of open book. It is a concept that wants to resume the use of outdoor reading and enhance the traditional reading of books that are being forgotten or discarded , and the digital readout is currently very fashionable. The Itinerant Book House opens to the city as a sculptural flower exposing the structure and hexagon shaped deck with access from all sides of the pavilion. From Socrates Sculpture Park in New York City serves as backdrop to enjoy the view of the city in a quiet and friendly context as the Itinerant Book House. The most important project characteristic is: adaptability to different green and open spaces.

Description

The members of SMiA believe that everyone is born with great natural talents but, as we grow up, we sometimes lose touch with some of them. Ironically formal education is one of the main reasons this happens. The result is that many people are never able to connect with their true natural talents and therefore are unaware of what they are actually capable. The itinerant book house seeks to be the place where we can discover and apply our true natural talent!

The idea came from the need to create versatile, modulated spaces, with easy and fast assembly for different events. These constructive advantages are characteristics of the deployable structures and the motivation for the study and application of this type of structures, which generate benefits such as adaptability, flexibility and space transformation.

The Itinerant Book House is a sculpture that opens to the city as a book opens the reader or does a flower in the forest. Finally within the project found some hammocks that give us the opportunity to relax and enjoy reading in an open space. The project is self-supporting.
The Itinerant Book House is intended for visitors from all over the world, as does the city of New York and at the Socrates Sculpture Park to generate an icon within the context of architecture and sculpture.
The Itinerant Book House, is a erecting deployable structure, consisting of a system of articulated bars symmetric grouped in a hexagonal base. The bars are 6 meters and a 20cm x 8cm section . The articulated rod system allows the structure to fold and deploy quickly and with the use of a simple crane . Accessories anchor rods are designed to be easy to reuse the steel industry and metal, or recycled materials such as pvc . Unions hexagonal , receive 6 pairs of jointed rods to setup the whole system. The same connections are used as joints at the ends of each bar system . The bars joined at the center of the pavilion form a structure which served reciprocal movement limit of the system.

The proposed design takes a single type of deployable to explore new possibilities for covering membranes. The scissor system is ideally suited, in their movement and structural behavior. Moreover, its application in the field of architecture is so new that there are no possibilities of design, which is appropriate for this research. These structures have developed a breakthrough from the morphological point of view, and this research was oriented from the structural behavior and enclosure.

A scissors consists of two rigid elements hinged together. Its advantage lies in having a single degree of freedom; this means that the system can be stabilized by placing a rigid element. Clustering allows multiple scissors form a complex system, without losing ownership of a single degree of freedom. Taking as a basis the principles for scissor systems, its exploration is done through groups that allow us to provide enclosures. These groups work with symmetric system scissors both straight and eccentric. These groupings will be termed as meshes and will be linear, triangular and square, exploring different coverage options.

The bars are designed articulated wood as the main material of the canopy dominant . The wood is quickly adapted to a landscape in the open, to maintain a clear visual aesthetics in a complex urban environment like New York. The pavilion has a translucent cover that casts a shadow useful for indoors. The cover and the structure is opened and closed for easy portability and quick assembly allowing it to be a traveling home reading.

The module works as an independent object, but it is necessary to verify the modules behave as does the membrane, or there is some variation. With the development of the model, it was verified that the fabric retains the same behavior of the module. A double-curved surface is formed at the junctions of each module, which is acceptable for the stability of the membrane structure, but it generates drainage issues at the junction of the four modules. The development of the mesh allowed us to see how the system that stiffens the membrane with the main structure must be in the opposite direction to the main scissors tissue, to allow the correct folding and unfolding the structure.
“The project is like an open book. It allows everyone of free thought and multicultural, to feel like they are at home”.
